<image:title>Members Blog - Howard - He loved music and sang in the choir at St James the Greater where he and the other trebles told smutty jokes during the sermon every Sunday. As his testicles were the size of ball bearings and had no fixed abode, he was actually quite good - once he sang the ‘Greater Love’ solo and everyone clapped. Except his mum, who cried like a baby. He was very proud of being the chap who lit the candles at each pew end. It meant having to run up and down the nave just before kick off, looking important. His choir made an LP (that’s a record, umm, flat black plastic disk – oh, forget it) and they took a team photo for the back of the sleeve.</image:title>
<image:caption>They said “make sure you come on Sunday with black shoes”. He forgot.</image:caption>

<image:title>Members Blog - Howard - Like many of us, Howard has found the last couple of years quite tough – a proper rollercoaster. He was as rocked as anyone by the exit of the previous MD. Many many sleepless nights, much angst and soul searching, but eventually, convinced they’d made the right change for the succession and long terms success of the choir. He was also delighted at new widespread ‘inner brightness’ as the choir escaped its woe’s and perils in sunny Mallorca in Summer 2019. He is chuffed to bits with the new musical direction from the baton d’Charlie but hopes not to be auditioned too soon – unless of course, it’s a Psalm. The concert in Lyddington last October (magnitude, melody, Andrew’s magnificent organ – oh, never mind) was a blast wasn’t it? He feels the efforts made by so many of the choir over the last 2 or 3 years were made worth it in that single evening.</image:title>
<image:caption>And then Covid. Proper rollercoaster? You betya. But here’s my message; hang on in there you lot. All we hear about is the difficulties of singing, aerosols, droplets, virus doom & gloom. Remember what it’s like to sing together, rehearsing or performing – doesn’t really matter, it will return and when it does, believe me, I’ll be right at the front of the queue (that is, unless I’m late, as usual). In the meantime, I’ll have to content myself with officially now being a rather pompous old git. Life eh!</image:caption>

<image:title>Members Blog - Richard - Naïve as I am, I thought that endless leisure lay ahead… mornings would stretch into afternoons reading and researching; maybe I would catalogue my science, and music books. [Note to self; must brush up on the Dewey Decimal system]. Perhaps I would luxuriate in full unrushed ecstasy with newspapers... I could enjoy Shakespeare once again with no essay to write afterwards! Maybe I would drift from Dante to Dostoyevsky via Flaubert - just because I had rediscovered time!</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Richard - One of our most enjoyable pastimes is long distance walking. In previous years we’ve completed dozens of walks in the UK, plus trekking around the Shetlands, Orkney, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Mann. I know why Mendelssohn and Beethoven walked so much. I know why Elgar loved the Malvern Hills. We have lots more treks to do in the UK. At present we have reached south Nottinghamshire on the 280 mile Macmillan, Cross Britain Way - Boston to Barmouth. Those billiard table flat fields in Lincolnshire grow great potatoes.</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Gordon - As I have already mentioned, competition was the keyword in those days. We were always chasing choral championship titles and our quest took us to such prestigious venues as the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, the Royal Festival Hall and the Buxton Opera House. I loved it. The only thing I didn’t like was the ghastly red shirt I had to wear.</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Tim - July 4th couldn’t come quickly enough - never mind Independence Day, in a race against time it was the re-opening of barbers that was exciting me. The battle to keep my hair under control has been all -consuming. I’ve nothing against Claudia Winkleman but nobody wants hair across your eye line like that! Do they? Really? I had begun to fear that I would only be able to see the bottom 50% of any view and had decided, not for the first time, that I was indeed fortunate that I need to concentrate on the bottom stave and not on the top line of any sheet of music. Tucking a picture of George Clooney into my back pocket- to show the hairdresser the style I was looking for- I booked an appointment at an exclusive barbershop in Leicester. You will know the rest; thanks to the extended Government lock-down in Leicester I am now condemned to another 2 weeks with a Rafa Nadal pony tail.</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Tim - You would possibly be impressed if I told you that I had spent this extra time to read worthy novels such as War and Peace. However, those who know me would suspect that this was extremely unlikely. The doubters would be correct but it hasn’t stopped me dwelling on something that Leo Tolstoy wrote, ‘The two most powerful warriors are patience and time’. He could not have foreseen how perfectly it would sum up today’s global predicament. Whether it’s waiting for a covid-19 vaccine, obeying ‘social distancing’ rules, or champing at the bit to get singing again, it will ultimately be patience and time that help us prevail.</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Michael - One of the remarkable features of this lockdown has been the weather. (Oh, come on, I’m British it’s obligatory to mention the weather.) But seriously, I can’t remember a spring like it. Consequently, we have been doing a lot of walking and in doing so discovering the wealth of footpaths around our village. There’s a whole network, including the Jurassic Way and during our walks we’ve really enjoyed watching spring, in all its fecundity, emerge from winter’s barren landscape. I can’t believe that we have lived here for over twenty-six years and only just discovered them - along with many others! I’ve never seen so many dog walkers, runners and cyclists. We even came upon a local landmark, the Judith Stone, in a local field. Apparently, it’s an ancient boundary marker from the 12thC</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Ann - Many years later - enter the plastic piano. I played on it all afternoon, my girls didn’t get a look in ‘Oh” I said ‘ Give Mummy a minute and I will play you a tune” When Bill came back from work I couldn’t wait to show him my musical prowess. “Listen to this!” I excitedly cried (picture two bored daughters looking on). I then proceeded to enthral him with ……. Baa, Baa, Black Sheep! He dutifully praised my efforts but that may have been his undoing as it probably created the beginning of a long and expensive journey. I carried on learning nursery rhymes, stopping when I needed more than eight notes. I didn’t even know that was called an octave and certainly couldn’t read music to expand my repertoire.</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Sue Doo - Rest didn’t come straight away. We’d planned to celebrate Mike’s retirement with a month in Italy. Good choice eh! He went to Sicily and I was to join him after our choir weekend - remember those, but my day of travel was when all of Italy, not just the north, went into lockdown. We had an anxious week as he tried to get out of Sicily and back to Amersfoort. The position was made more difficult by his having to clear his rented flat by the end of April, not easy by yourself and when businesses are closed. He has found new skills in specialist cleaning, which I’m sure will be put to good use. Repatriation to one’s own country is considered essential travel. I set off to collect Mike by car. It was an adventure, after being stuck in one place, to drive through the dawn countryside towards Harwich, the ferry - and Mike!</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Sue Doo - In my fabric box there is a remnant of silk embroidered with crescent shapes, bought from Liberty, that I’ve been shy of cutting into for over twenty years. But I dived in and have made a jacket, finishing it off with handstitching to decorate it but also strengthen the cuffs and button stand. Hand-sewing, if you like it of course, is one of those pastimes that is relaxing as it needs a certain amount of careful concentration which releases your mind to think, or not think, as you choose. Mostly the latter in my case. I was due to visit a friend in April and to see the Walker Gallery exhibition of An English Lady’s Wardrobe, but caught a virtual tour instead. I’ve always enjoyed cooking with yeast, but now I make all our bread and some for others too. I’d recommend Elizabeth David’s English Bread and Yeast Cookery, which is as much a reference book as a recipe book. The other useful one is How to Make Bread by Emmanuel Hadjandreou. Because the weather has been so dry, I have also been doing rather a lot of exterior paintwork. For this, I’d recommend getting someone else to do it.</image:title>

Each lair was covered with fallen branches, upon which fern foliage was piled up, sometimes to a foot or more in depth. No speck of light crept into our sanctuary and therefore, we hoped, no rain would penetrate our cosy retreat. We filled the days raiding each other’s position, chasing away friends to other parts of the moor. We were Knights, brandishing wooden swords and hardboard shields, duelling in the midday sun. We fought with water, squirted from empty washing up liquid bottles and replenished from the ‘The Dog Pond’, a shallow, clay hollow.</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Clive - Other expeditions included standing on railway footbridges and engaging in conversation with the signalman who was drawing on a cigarette outside his signal box. We would find out when the next train was to pass and so linger to gaze at the locomotive and its train. We would breathe in the delightful aroma of steam and oil as an engine puffed beneath us. We would wave wildly with our handkerchiefs as ‘The Blue Pullman’, a then cutting technology diesel train, zoomed through a Derbyshire station. Our aim? To be recognised by the Driver with an acknowledging toot of the whistle or a blast of the two tone horn.</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Clive - The Garden Railway has reached a pinnacle in its operation. The track, much to the envy of Network Rail, has never been in such a good condition. Leaves on the line, uneven track and shabby station buildings are problems of the past. Wooden, warped level crossings replaced with modern structures, thus allowing traffic to flow more freely. Points have been electrified and ‘sequenced’. One push of a button can change several points to select the chosen route!</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Jenny - I followed Charlie’s link to the Stayathomechoir. I was lucky enough to get onto their latest project with The Swingle Singers and attend a webinar. The webinar was great. A mixture of learning about the piece “You’re all I need to get by”, warm up exercises, rehearsing (with us all muted!) and as it was the Swingles, of course, a bit of Beat boxing. I can now do a passable Snare Drum! Practicing off line is also easy with recordings of your part with or without the accompaniment.</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Jenny - Next, I tried Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir of thousands. I am not not sure if my upload of the piece he wrote specially for the moment reached him. That wasn’t my reason for doing it. It just got my vocal cords moving. . I also noticed Gareth Malone was rehearsing Vivaldi’s Gloria with his Great British Chorus. When I really wanted to blow way the cobwebs the BBC Radio 4 Sunday Worship’s singalong to the accompaniment to the Hallelujah Chorus was just the thing. Finally, I should point you towards Ex Cathedra. It combines films, contributions and an online workshop. Worth a look?</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Jenny - I reflect on the positive things to come out of this period. I see more families out for walks, hear louder birdsong and see clearer skies. We’ve also done some decorating, and cleared rubbish from end of the garden into its holding bay awaiting the opening of the local tip)! I have had to learn to slow down - ask Richard how that is going.. He has got it sussed and had already taken out a subscription to “The Idler” magazine a few months ago. I have been caught having a sneaky read and learning from it. So much so I am looking forward to the live concerts from The Wigmore at 1pm on BBC R3 starting in June. Finally, my go to piece of non choral music which many of you may know is Sir Peter Maxwell Davies “Farewell to Stromness” whilst revisiting recent holiday photos. Enjoy!</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Julie - Two additional activities come close to eclipsing the above in the enjoyment level; the first is jigsaws. I had one in my cupboard that I’d been saving for a rainy day and that day came last Tuesday. It is a 1000 piece picture of London Bridge with the claim The Smallest Jigsaw EVER – a claim that is substantiated by the fact that 1000 pieces fit into the 42 x 29 cm rectangle. The pieces are tiny – magnifying glasses are essential! I’ll send you a picture when/if I complete it! - here it is in its current state - a long way to go.</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Pamela - In reality life is not that simple. Doing our best to fight this hideous virus and to stay safe does not support a creative environment. I prefer to follow the words of Terry Waite who was imprisoned for over 1,700 days in appalling conditions, that we are being “kept safe” and not “locked down”. During the first two weeks we were hurling ourselves around the living room with Joe Wicks and the like. Nordic walking to the park, deep breathing through yoga, online pilates, meditation and choral warmups (hmm) occupied hours each day. The frustration of missing out on-line shopping slot, toilet rolls and pasta became too much to bear. Social distancing (surely unsocial), and the choreography of queuing outside the supermarket all became part of life’s rich pattern. Yoga is my daily routine, I enjoy particularly the horizontal meditative poses. Cloud watching and thoughts of CAKE floating by and whether we should have red or white at dinner and can Gs&Ts (plural) be before the yardarm, and should I join Alcoholics Anonymous before Weight Watchers and what challenging task will Tim Pipkin next give us in the kitchen?</image:title>

<image:title>Members Blog - Pamela - When I am working accompanying music influences the outcome. Modern jazz helps to create a sense of timelessness. Believed to be related to ’jasm’, meaning pep and energy the swing just happens! There is a wonderful dance - skip like quality to Laudamus Te in Poulenc’s Gloria. Singing along with the support of other singers. Uplifting. The Mozart Requiem, particularly the Introit is so dark and rich, and I love the angels leading me to heaven in Faure’s In Paradisum. Rachmaninov’s Vespers and the ribbon like flow of the soothing voices aagh…….the list is endless. No list would be complete without including the beautiful music we have hopefully only temporarily put aside: Gjello, Whitacre, Vaughan Williams, Monteverdi and others. Singing is what we look forward to. Being together again is what we look forward to.</image:title>

<image:title>Public Blog - CHIRRUP - June 2025 - Goodness, there is so much to be chirruping about this nesting time. York Minster, twitter, twitter, Fotheringhay – steady on blackbirds, form an orderly queue, yes, I know there are strawberries, don’t push. Gracious, how unruly. Where was I? Oh yes, St. Stephen’s in London. Pigeons! Parakeets! Pelicans! A stuffed Dodo. Wait. I’m getting in a flap. I need to perch on a branch and compose myself. There, that’s better.</image:title>

<image:title>Public Blog - CHIRRUP - Summer 2024 - Fotheringhay in June Four weeks later we found ourselves facing a large audience again, this time on English soil, in the historic setting of Fotheringhay Church. The occasion was the first of a series of ‘white rose’ gigs that we’ll be doing over the next year. These are concerts in places with a Wars of the Roses, Yorkist, Richard III, connection – Fotheringhay, where he was born, York, of which he was Duke, and Leicester, where he is buried.</image:title>

<image:caption>January brought us some joy of our own when the New Year’s Honours list included Nick Hill. The husband of choir alto Kate Hill, Nick is a long-time friend of the choir. He was given an MBE for his services to the Heritage sector. No choir member’s loft with suspected beams, crucks, king posts and cobwebs has ever been safe from his eager and informed inspection, and we send him our heartiest congratulations.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our 2024 tour – Budapest in May. This is a city, rich in history, architecture, music and all sorts of arts. It is a romantic city, sitting astride the Danube, Buda on one side, Pest on the other. The Parliament buildings, Buda Castle, St Stephen's Basilica, Chain link bridge, Szechenyi Thermal Baths, Andrassy Avenue – the list of famous sights are endless here and it is no surprise that choirs, orchestras and bands flock to Budapest each year to perform, to entertain and to enjoy each other's company for a few relaxing days.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We were no different - we flocked to budapest and you can read about our adventures in the Summer 2024 edition of Chirrup, the choir’s newsletter. From Matthias church in the castle district, to St Stephen’s basilica and the beautiful Nador Hall, we sang our hearts out and knocked their socks off in equal measure. Fabulous restaurants, a night at the opera, trains, funiculars, craft beer and thermal baths. More please. More.</image:caption>

<image:title>Public Blog - TOURS & TRIPS - Glastonbury & Wells - October 2023</image:title>
<image:caption>October 2023 saw us heading for Somerset and Glastonbury Abbey - specifically, to the Abbot’s Kitchen. Yes, honestly. It’s one of the best-preserved medieval kitchens in Europe, a curious octagonal building that looks a lot like Hagrid’s Hut and stands in the grounds of the Abbey ruins. And somehow, we’d obtained permission to sing in it. Just for ourselves. No audience. Which was really rather special. Dodging the hanging bunches of herbs and suspended hams we stood in a big circle around the walls, took a deep breath and sang. First Lay a Garland, a heart-breaking Victorian madrigal by Luke Pearsall, then Palestrina’s, Sicut Cervus. Our voices rolled around the stone walls, up into the odd conical roof, and left via the smoke hole in the centre.</image:caption>

<image:title>Public Blog - TOURS & TRIPS</image:title>
<image:caption>From Glastonbury we went on to Wells, six miles away, to the Cathedral. Normal if you’re a chorister of course, but for us, a rare treat. We loved rehearsing ‘behind the scenes’ in the specially-designed ultra-modern song school or the creaking and arthritic Vicar’s Hall that had been around since the fourteenth century. And working ‘out front’ dwarfed and amazed by the Cathedral’s famous scissor arches, was something else. What a glorious, soaring space. And the SOUND. Wow. Hearing the volume echoing down the nave after we’d stopped singing was AMAZING.</image:caption>

<image:title>Public Blog - TOURS & TRIPS - Mallorca - May 2019</image:title>
<image:caption>“So, it’s Mallorca then, yes?” Five seemingly innocent words spoken back in early 2018 as the committee settled on extending our regular Cathedral tour to the near continent. Now the Singers are quite used to packing up our voices, music, shiny shoes, bow ties and heading off to Europe, but truthfully, it has been a few years. Springtime 2018 saw some serious planning – the main early effort focussing on finding venues, hotels, flights and transfers…</image:caption>

<image:title>Public Blog - TOURS & TRIPS</image:title>
<image:caption>Hotel and flights secured, we decided on a recce. In November. In the cold. In the rain. Insane…! Over two days and two nights, we secured a fabulous line up of performance venues, including (after some embarrassingly plaintive begging), a full traditional Mass at the great giant gothic Palma Cathedral, La Seu. Added to this, we secured a singing day trip to pretty Soller, travelling there by original wooden train and a lovely musical Gala evening, complete with food and wine from the splendid people at the Anglican church in Palma.</image:caption>
